INDEPENDENT EVIDENCE FOR DIFFERENT ORIGIN OF THE STRESS FIELD IN AREAS BEYOND REACH OF THE UNDERSTANDING FOREFRONT OF THE AFRICAN PLATE (Αγγλική)

    • Considering that the sedimentary cover in the North Aegean through (about 5Km thick) is about 3 times, or more, thicker than in most basins in Southern Aegean (less than 1.5Km thin), and the fault-bounded Neogeneblocks are tilting towards the origin of the Neogene-Quaternary sediments, we are allowed to believe that the post-Miocene streching and strain accumulation are directly related to the fault tectonics and the thickness of the Plio-Quaternary sedimentary cover in the submarine and intermountain Neogene grabens. The lack of any relation of the earthquake potential distribution in the greater are of Greece to the distance from the Hellenic Trench, the contact zone of the converging plates of Eurasia and Africa, indicates that the stretching of the lithosphere, at least in the North Aegean, can not be ascribed to the post-Miocene subduction of the African plate. Deepening, tilting and spreading controlled by the fault tectonics and the sedimentary cover in the North Aegean Trough combined with westwards driving by the Turkish subplate may account for the high earthquake potential in the graben area, that may well be compared to that observed in areas of about the same size along the Hellenic Trench. The seismicity along the complex shear-zone of the Saros Graben area is discontinuous with strong tendency to occur in clusters. This probably attests to the newly developing north segmented boundary of the Aegean subplate. The eartquake hazard potential in the North Aegean area seems inherently patchy in time and space
    • Η εργασία αυτή εξετάζει αν το πεδίο των τάσεων που δρα στο βόρειο ήμισυ του ευρύτερου Ελληνικού χώρου προέρχεται από τη σύγκρουση των πλακών της Ευρασίας και Αφρικής. Αν συμβαίνει αυτό, πρέπει το σεισμικό δυναμικό περοχών ίσων και στην ίδια απόσταση από τη ζώνη επαφής των συγκρουόμενων πλακών να είναι περίπου ίσο και αισθητά μικρότερο από αυτό περιοχών ίσης έκτασης κατά μήκος της ελληνικής τάφρου.
