After a few introductory words on the purification and relevant ritual a historical retrospection is made as regards the institution of scape-goat which occurs in antiquity not only among indo-europeans (Hittites, Indians, Greeks, Romans) but also e.g. among Hebrews and Phoenicians. The institution of "farmakos" is then examined as it was practiced among the Greeks with special concentration on the two Athenian "syvakchi", who on the 6th day of Thargelion were annually expelled from the state. From a detailed investigation of available sources and in accordance with the opinion of the latest researchers conclusion is reached that the "farmakos" was not killed in the Greek world. Besides the fact that the Greeks held the sacrifice of men in abhorrence and the use of verbs indicative of expulsion (εξάγειν, αππέμπειν, αγινείν, emissere) there is a very strong reason which excludes the killing of farmakos, namely that in case the farmakos were killed within the boundaries of the state then the "minimata" and "ayi" and would remain alive and would continue to terrorize the country.
Η εργασία αυτή αναφέρεται σε ζητήματα καθαρότητας, ή με χρησιμοποίηση θρησκευτικού όρου, κάθαρσης. Οι συναισθηματικά επιβαρημένες ενέργειες του ανθρώπου για την κάθαρση με τον καιρό κατάντησαν τελετουργίες εμπλεκόμενες στην επικοινωνία του ανθρώπου με τον θεό. Η κάθαρση από τα μιάσματα και την κάθε λογής ενοχή γινόταν με διάφορους τρόπους ανάλογα με την περίπτωση, αλλά συχνά με την χρήση κάποιας τελετουργίας. Στη συνέχεια η εργασία αναφέρεται εκτενώς στηντελετουργία του φάρμακου με την οποία μία κοινότητα επιζητεί να απαλλαγεί από τα όποια κακά έχουν συσσωρευθεί και την απειλούν, καθώς και στην τελετουργία του αποδιοπομπαίου τράγου.
