In this study an attempt is made to determine the earthquake potential trend along the island of Crete, the southern branch of the Hellenic sedimentary arc.
The return period range for potentially damaging and destructive shocks in central Crete indicates an earthquake potential slightly less than surmised for western and eastern Crete. This is an agreement with the number of shocks and the released energy during the study period (1958-1987), as well as with the once-per-year earthquake, i.e. the annual maximum magnitude that has a probability of 63% of being exceeded in one year.
Στην εργασία αυτή επιχειρείται ο καθορισμός της τάσης του σεισμικού δυναμικού κατά μήκος της νήσου Κρήτης. Τα υπάρχοντα σεισμολογικά δεδομένα (1958-1987) και οι υπολογισμοί του χρονικού εύρους αναμονής εκλύσεως σεισμών ορισμένης τάξεως μεγέθους παρουσιάζουν ελαφρώς μικρότερο σεισμικό δυναμικό στην κεντρική, σε σχέση προς τη δυτική και την ανατολική Κρήτη.
