The reaction of Halphen is considered as the most characteristic of the cotton-seed oil, which is obvious even when it is submitted to the agency of various powerful chemical means. For the protection of the olive-oil from various adulterations with seed-oil, a law was voted, according to which during the import of seed-oils in the customs, they are mixed with 10% of cotton-seed oil in order to be easily found the adulteration on the basis of the explicit reaction of Halphen.

Για να προστατευθεί το ελαιόλαδο από τις διάφορες νοθείες με σπορέλαιο, ψηφίστηκε νόμος όπου επιβάλλεται κατά την εισαγωγή των σπορελαίων, στο τελωνείο να αναμιγνύονται με 10% βαμβακέλαιο ώστε να βρίσκεται εύκολα η νοθεία, βάσει της αντίδρασης του Halphen.
