In the Archives of the Archaeological Society of Athens is on file a letter written in Troy by H. Schliemann in the year 1873. It was written on the 29th of May 1873, according to the Julian or 10th of June 1873 of the Gregorian Calendar and is addressed to Stefanos Koumanoudis, then Secretary General of the Society. It was written in response to a request for a visit of Schliemann's excavations in Troy. It proves that Schliemann was still in Troy on the 10th of June and was to stay in the Troad until 7/19 of June, so that he could clear the area of "Priam's Megaron" in which the treasure was found. For the first time, known to date, in our letter Schliemann calls his find "the Treasure of Priam" which he avoided before this from fear of becoming known to Turks who might wish to confiscate the treasure. The letter to Koumanoudis provides a terminus ante quem for the discovery, but fails to give us the exact date of that monumantal event
Η διευθέτηση του Αρχείου της Αρχαιολογικής Εταιρείας υπό της κας. Αλ. Μπικάκη συνετέλεσε στην ανεύρεση εγγράφων και λογαριασμών του Παναγιώτη Σταματάκη σχετικών με τις ανασκαφές των Μυκηνών του 1876. Στην ομάδα των εγγράφων αυτών βρέθηκε επιστολή του Heinrich Schliemann, γραμμένη στην ελληνική γλώσσα και στην Τροία, που παραμένει αδημοσίευτος. Ίσως η ανακοίνωσή της να συμβάλλει στο παλαιό πρόβλημα της ημερομηνίας της ευρέσεως του λεγόμενου "Θησαυρού του Πριάμου" που υπεκινήθη τελευταίως υπό του D. Easton D. και Α. Trail. Ακόμη θα συμβάλλει ίσως και στον βαθμό της αξιοπιστίας του Σλήμαν στις υπ' εκείνου παρασχεθείσες λεπτομέρειες της ζωής και δράσεώς του, που στους χρόνου μας ετέθησαν εν αμφιβόλω
