This study attempted to estimate the level of Greek mothers' knowledge related to the harmful effects of sunlight to the skin and whether this knowledge led to protective measures for them and their children. The level of mothers' sun-knowledge as well as mothers' and children' s sun-protection practices in 1995 was found to be statistically improved compared to that of 1993 (p < 0.001). This improvement, though far from optimal, was probably achieved through the mass media as no well-organized educational campaign on sun-protection has been undertaken in Greece. This study shows the necessity for such campaign in order to increase mothers' sun-protection knowledge and encourage them to steadily incorporate relevant practices in their life style.
