The geography and topography of Greece cause a great number of disturbances on the winds and the other weather phenomena; winds of local type, sea, land, mountain and valley breezes, are to be observed in nearly every place of the Greece area; various, topographically determined influences, on the general atmospheric motions are also included under the term of local winds, in this work. Such locally affected winds are described even in Homer's Odyssey and classical philosophers like Aristote and Theophraste also mention types of catabatic winds. In recent decades greek meteorologists, D. Eginitis, E. Mariolopoulos, V. Kyriazopoulos etc., have described local winds at several sites of Greece, of three main kinds: catabatic of the Bora type, catabatic of the Foehn type and reinforced winds due to canalization in river valleys.
The present paper is a general survey of the special or local winds in this country; the described cases are mainly based on: 1. Existing bibliography, 2. Aythor' s personal research and experience with his 25 years occupation in Aviation Forecasting, 3. The information collected after a circular letter, in 1965, to the meteorological stations of the Hellenic Met. Service
Η μελέτη αυτή αποτελεί μια αρκετά γόνιμη έρευνα για τους τοπικούς ανέμους σ' ολόκληρη την Ελλάδα, βασιζόμενη τόσο σε ιστορικά και βιβλιογραφικά στοιχεία, όσο και σε στοιχεία τοπικών ανέμων. Επίσης, αποτελεί συμβολή στη γνώση του κλίματος και του μικροκλίματος των περιοχών του ελληνικού χώρου. Στη μελέτη αυτή, εκτός των γνωστών τοπικών ανέμων όπως ο Λεβάντες, ο Σκίρωνας, ο Ευρωκλύδων, ο Γραίγος, ο ψυχρός καταβατικός άνεμος τύπου Βοra και ο θερμός καταβατικός άνεμος τύπου Foehn, παρατίθενται επίσης συμπληρωματικά στοιχεία για μερικούς τοπικούς ανέμους όπως ο Βαρδάρης, ο Βορράς της Ν. Κρήτης, ο Γαβρολιμάδας Πατρών, η Νοτιά και ο Λίβας της Β. Κρήτης, ο Πουνέντες της Ρόδου και ο Τσικνιάς της Τήνου.
