Lead bullae, that all Byzantines, mainly officials, used for cosing or authenticating letters and other documents, are preserved in large numbers and constitute a major source for historical and art historical studies. Excepting some anonymous seals, probably used by professionals scribes for letters commisssioned to them, most bullae bear the name(s) and title(s) of their owners. They thus provide information for all aspect of Byzantine life: for prosopography, for administrative history, for geography (cf. seal of a curator of Mantzikert and Interior Iberia; this places Interior Iberia in the vicinity of Mantzikert and invites reconsideration of Constantine IX's much denounced "demobilization" of the Iberian army); for the evolution of styles and of iconographies; for the development of ideologies in Byzantium and in Bulgaria ; and about the attitude manifested in this matter by seal owners when selecting the invocations or the iconography of their bulla.
Η ανακοίνωση αυτή αποσκοπεί στο να δείξει ότι τα Βυζαντινά μολυβδόβουλλα, ιστορική πηγή γνωστή και πολυχρησιμοποιημένη ήδη από τα τέλη του περασμένου αιώνα, παρουσιάζουν ένα καινούργιο και ανανεωμένο ενδιαφέρον για δύο κυρίως λόγους. Πρώτον, γιατί ο αριθμός τους αυξήθηκε σημαντικά χάρη σε πρόσφατα και καλοδημοσιευμένα ευρήματα. Έχουμε πια στη διάθεσή μας μια κρίσημη μάζα, η οποία μας επιτρέπει να δούμε το σφραγιστικό υλικό με νέο μάτι και με νέες, ποσοτικές, μεθόδους. Και δεύτερον, γιατί μπορούμε σήμερα να ακολουθήσουμε μεθόδους, που ήδη εφαρμόζονται στη μοντέρνα νομισματική, που είναι τόσο συγγενική προς τη σφραγιδολογία, και να θέσουμε στα μολυβδόβουλλα καινούργια ερωτήματα που ίσως οδηγήσουν στην ανανέωση ορισμένων θεμάτων της Βυζαντινής ιστορίας ή και της ιστορίας της Βυζαντινής τέχνης.
