The ps. Hippocratic treatise on the number seven has been transmitted in an old latin translation. Only parts of the original greek text have been preserved and were collected E. Littre and G. Helmreich. To the above parts, numerous citations have been added from other hippocratic treatises or ancient writers, as Philo, Galenos and Aetios.Much interest has excited the cosmological introduction of the treatise, because W. Roscher sustained that it was composed before Pythagoras and Hecataios. His opinion, however, was not accepted by subsequent writers, who preferred a date about the beginning of the fourth century B.C. Possibly, the medical part of the treatise may be even younger. In the present edition the latin text has been reproduced and provided with a large critical apparatus. A historical introduction precedes the latin text, from which a reconstuction of the lost greek parts of the treatise has been attempted. The edition of Prof. H. Toole of the treatise on the number seven is certainly another valuable contribution to the study of the hippocratic Corpus.
Ο συγγραφέας επιχειρεί να αποκαταστήσει το απολεσθέν ελληνικό κείμενο του Περί Εβδομάδων βιβλίου του Ιπποκράτη, κατόπιν παραβολής της λατινικής μετάφρασης μετά των σωζόμενων ελληνικών αποσπασμάτων και με τη βοήθεια των παράλληλων χωρίων άλλων ιπποκρατικών συγγραμάτων. Για την αποκατάσταση χρησιμοποίησε βοηθητικά και άλλες σύγχρονες μεσαιωνικές μεταφράσεις στη λατινική, όπως του Προγνωστικού, του Περί Αέρων, Υδάτων και Τόπων, των Αφορισμών και του Περί Διαίτης, από τα οποία συντάχθηκε ελληνολατινικό λεξιλόγιο. Ο κ. Τουλ χρησιμοποίησε και το μεταγλωτισμένο στη Γερμανική αραβικό υπόμνημα του Ψευδο-Γαληνού, όπως και τις γενόμενες προσπάθειες αποκαταστάσεως ενίων παραγράφων ή κεφαλαίων από σύγχρονους συγγραφεις. Ο συγγραφέας εκφράζει την ελπίδα ότι η προσπάθεια του θα συμβάλει στην καλύτερη γνώση και κατανόηση του Περί Εβδομάδων ψευδο-ιπποκρατικού βιβλίου.
